York City’s Kiwanis Lake has suffered several issues in recent years that have affected both water and park life quality. These issues were caused by increased pollutants from wildlife and upstream sources that were getting caught in the lake. The lake was no longer able to regulate itself because its floodgate and fountains had failed beyond repair. The park and its water were no longer conducive for visitors and aquatic life.
The Rotary Club of York has executed a 4-phase plan with its partners and donors to include the following:
1. Reduce and manage excessive wildlife populations.
2. Install aeration, sludge control, fountains, and lights.
3. Repair and improve the existing floodgate and protect it from future rain events.
4. Install Smart Lake Technology to monitor and alert water quality issues before they become uncontrollable.
Stewart & Tate and its sister company, Riley Welding of Hanover, donated materials and services to assist in this restoration project. Riley manufactured a coffer dam that was installed to hold back the water from the gate, while Stewart & Tate’s industrial division set up an overhead crane to lift the coffer dam into place. S&T then assisted Hydro Consulting Maintenance Services in the removal of the dam gate and cylinder.
The biggest challenge of this project was related to a protected species of herons that use the park as a nesting site. In order to not disrupt their habitats, phases of the project had to be carefully timed and executed. Work had to be postponed and, in some cases, certain features relocated so that the project could harmonize with these protected long-legged freshwater birds.

Stewart & Tate’s Industrial Services Division has served as one of Land O’ Lakes preferred vendors in providing ongoing construction services. Called upon to complete a wide range of projects, annual work volume completed at the Land O’ Lakes Carlisle, PA, plant typically ranges between $1-$3M.

Stewart & Tate Construction recently completed a complex rigging project at Strawberry Square in downtown Harrisburg, PA.
The lift involved the hoisting of new chiller equipment through a third floor window of the downtown retail center. Crew members from Stewart & Tate’s specialized industrial division picked three separate sections of the chiller’s equipment by crane and carefully lowered them onto ramps built out of steel C-Channels through the mechanical room window along Walnut Street. Skates which were welded onto the bottom of each piece of the equipment allowed the units to be lowered onto the cantilevered tracks and gently backed into the building.
The chiller, which was broken down into three portions weighing between 12,000 lbs. and 18,000 lbs., will be rebuilt and installed by Stewart & Tate and Enginuity, LLC—the mechanical contractor on the job.
Strawberry Square is a mixed-use retail and commercial complex located in downtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It is owned and managed by the Harristown Development Corporation, a non-profit organization.

Stewart & Tate’s Industrial Services Division has completed a wide variety of projects at Church & Dwight’s (the maker of Arm & Hammer brand products) manufacturing/distribution facility over the years.

Stewart & Tate Construction was selected as the Construction Manager for this $65M project for the construction of a new Soybean Processing Facility in Lancaster County, PA.
Located on a 65-acre site, the plant consists of two distinct facilities: a grain elevator which will receive, dry and store soybeans, and a soybean processing plant which will prepare soybeans and separate them into three components: soybean meal, soybean oil and soybean hulls.
The plant will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation, and through the use of waste steam from Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority Waste-to-Energy Facility next door. Compared to current practices, Perdue’s project will result in a 72 percent net decrease in total emissions. And, with plans to process up to 17.5 million bushels per year, Perdue’s plant will eliminate the need to transport soybeans and finished product long distances.
During construction, upwards of 300 tradespeople worked in harmony to complete the project.
