In 1935 Robert H. Stewart of York, Founded the York
Construction Company. The primary services included excavation, parking lot and
road construction. In 1939 Luther D. March joined Mr. Stewart in a partnership.
By 1946 the partnership evolved into Stewart & March, Inc. Excavation and
road construction remained the firm’s major line of work during that period.
Throughout the late 1940’s and
the 1950’s, Stewart & March expanded their services to include demolition,
concrete construction and underground utility installation. Many large
industrial plants in the greater York
area enlisted the services of our growing firm. A reputation for quality and
timely completion evolved from performing work for companies like the York
Corporation, Dentist’s Supply Co., S. Morgan Smith Co. and The American Chain
Company.
In the 1960’s York area manufacturers were growing rapidly
and local utility companies were also expanding their services throughout the
community. Stewart & March met the pace of the burgeoning town by investing
in new construction equipment that had recently begun to utilize hydraulics.
With their new equipment Stewart & March was able to maintain a competitive
edge due to an increase in work productivity. Many of the major utilities in
the York area
were installed by our company during the 60’s and 70’s.
As production changes occurred,
the 1980’s brought still more opportunity to our firm from area manufacturers.
Industrial contracting services became a major focus for our talented people.
Equipment rigging, millwright services and structural steel erection were added
to our repertoire. In-plant renovations were a fitting utilization of our
service capabilities. During that time our earth moving crews expanded and began
building roads and bridges for the State and regional Municipalities.
After 50 years and strong steady
growth the 1990’s brought still more change to our company. Realizing the changes
in technology and therefore customer needs, we decided that our construction
processes should be separated to serve our clients better. Accordingly, we
developed two divisions. The Heavy/Highway division places their emphasis on
earth moving, utility, paving and concrete installation activities. Our
Industrial Division performs mainly in-plant construction including
excavation, concrete, steel, equipment rigging and office renovations.
Mr. March retired in 1968 and
sold his interest to the Stewart family. In 1999 the company name was changed
to Stewart & Tate, Inc., to more accurately reflect the management and ownership
of the business. The Tate family has been greatly influential in the management
and success of the company since 1946, thus the new company name.
The Stewart Family has
maintained mining operations in Cecil County, MD since the 1960’s and has participated
in the county’s continued growth. Significant family land holdings together
with a substantial increase in real estate development activity in the area encouraged the
formation of Stewart & Tate’s Maryland Division in 2002. This division has
grown quickly to become Cecil County's largest site development contractor. Recently
we received the coveted “Contractor of the Year” award from the Land
Development Council of the Maryland Homebuilders Association.
With fewer manufacturing jobs in
the York area,
the Industrial Division has been successfully pursuing commercial and healthcare
construction work for the last several years. The healthcare market fits the
division’s strategy perfectly as it requires specialized services, adherence to
schedules and detailed work procedures. It will provide a solid foundation for
future growth of the Division.
Today, Stewart & Tate, Inc.
employs 275 men and women working in three divisions operating in Maryland, Pennsylvania
and Delaware.
Our goals and business ethics echo those of our predecessor and founder, Mr.
Stewart, and are expressed in our Mission Statement.
